We’re also fine with people skipping versions (buying v3 then v5). We’re totally fine with people using older versions though. So, it’s likely that we’ll ask for a similar amount every couple of years, for a major update. iStat Menus 5 was released 5 August 2014. iStat Menus 4 was released 28 November 2012. IStat Menus 3 was released 22 April 2010. We decided that if we were going to continue to build iStat Menus, we were going to do it even better, but we’d have to charge for it. It was too much work to do on the side, especially because we’d realised we needed access to most Mac models to do it well. If you look at the version history, you’ll notice there weren’t any updates. Getting version 2 out the door was a huge effort.
We had other jobs at the time, so that was fine. We then released version 2, again for free.

So a lot of the use cases can be ignored and you'd probably be fine with your computer in the typical 'it just works' apple way, but I feel that being slightly more proactive is worth the paranoia overall.Ī bit of the backstory: We released iStat Menus 1 as a free app and it did ok. My network can be sketchy at home, so checking UL/DL speeds quickly is nice, and it's also nice to use it to monitor downloads indirectly.
I'm okay with and even appreciate this minimalism, but having a free space monitor front and center is almost required. SSDs are amazing but they require semi constant maintenance in terms of deleting files and pruning non-essentials. If my memory utilization is high, it's probably because some app is leaking in the background or I left a heavy app open without thinking, so it's a good marker to monitor. When I'm on battery power, I want to see if something's pegging my CPU high before it just starts chomping mAh and burning the shit out of my lap. I like to keep an eye on things generally because resources are limited, especially when your main machine is a MacBook and you juggle a bunch of things at once.
